FIRE EMERGENCY
When a fire unexpectedly breaks out in a building, there are several steps to ensure your safety.
1. Remain calm.
Panic will reduce your reaction speed and impair judgment.
Take a breath, have confidence and be in control.
2. Sound the fire alarm
The fire alarm warns additional people in the building of the danger.
The fire alarm is usually located in a central area and it brightly colored in a red color.
A glass panel may need to be broken an a lever pulled to sound the alarm.
3. Phone emergency services
Alerting the fire department as soon as possible is vital.
The fire department will need to know the following information:
Fire exits are normally well lit up and are usually located in a neon sign above a doorway or a staircase.
These signs are located in a specifically designed to attract attention
5. Leave the building
Vacating the building in an ordered controlled manner is very important as panic will cause unnecessary accidents.
Walk, do not run.
If there is time collect your valuables.
Never use an elevator during fire.
Close all doors behind you as you leave, in order to help contain the fire.
Assist with any disabled persons, people with injuries, children or babies.
6. Controlling the fire
ONLY attempt to extinguish the fire if the fire is on a small scale.
Use only a fire extinguisher and have been trained how to use it.
If the fire is not controlled after the use of one fire extinguisher.
7. Leave the area
Your personal safety is the most important issue.
Observe any obstructions in the way of any doorway or emergency exits.
8. Direct fire engines
Be on the look out for the fire trucks.
They may be trying to find easy access to the building and your directions could save time.
9. Stand aside
Once the emergency services have arrived please stand aside as any interference could reduce their reaction time and hinder their job in putting out the fire.
Be on hand to assist with any upset people who will be needing assurance and comfort.
10. Do not re enter the building
Never re-enter a building until being given the all clear from the emergency services.
Reactivation of fires once thought to be extinguished can occur.
